Going abroad on student visas!

Student visas, Immigration consultants, Avoiding Immigration Scams

The United States of America, Canada and United Kingdom continue to be the most preferred choice for Indian students planning to study overseas. International Students

Recently students have started to seek student visas for Australia and New Zealand.

Most Indian parents want their children to have a sound education and are willing to spend money to help pay for their children's education.

         CAUTIONARY NOTE

Some people who have a desire to go abroad are mislead into believing that a student visa can be used to enter a foreign country.

Things have now changed and those breaking the law can and do end up in jail. Don't fall victim to schemes that are illegal to land illegally in a country. If you have no desire to study abroad then do not seek a student visa.

To settle abroad an immigrant visa is required. Please do not be mislead.

When seeking immigration advice seek out reputable, professional advisors who will guide you correctly.

Check the daily newspapers in India and you will find them full of advertisements from various organizations and agents advertising help in acquiring student visas for countries like Australia, New Zealand, UK or Canada.

SELECTING AN IMMIGRATION CONSULTANT IN INDIA

Hiring the right kind of immigration consultant can help applicants but caution needs to be exercised when selecting an immigration consultant.

Internet availability and the easy access to credit cards makes it now possible to consult with consultants worldwide.

If you need current immigration information for instance for Canada, then it is quite easy to consult a qualified Canadian consultant. Most consultants and lawyers accept credit card payments. As the saying goes, "Geography is now history" distances today do not matter.

Here are some advertisements that were published in one of India's leading newspaper, The Times of India on May 4, 2007. Advertisement From Times of India

READ THE FINE PRINT AND TRY AND UNDERSTAND WHAT SOME OF THESE ADVERTISEMENTS ARE OFFERING? CAN THEY REALLY DELIVER ON WHAT THEY ARE PROMISING IN THEIR AD'S?

While many advertisers offer professional immigration consultancy services, there are always the odd ones that are only trying to make a fast buck. Before spending your money do check and confirm credentials of consultants. Times of India ad4

While I am not in a position to verify the claims of advertisers as I am not an immigration professional. I found it rather strange that one of the advertisements in the Times of India May 4, 2007 issue, for Canada Migration mentions 'Passport & Citizenship in 2yrs'  I acquired Canadian citizenship in 1977 and at that time one had to wait five years. Subsequently this period was changed to three years. Unless laws  have changed and I am not aware of such changes. I think that even now three years residence is still a requirement for Canadian citizenship. To confirm this I visited the Canadian Citizenship Website and found that the time frame is still three years.

Identifying & Avoiding Immigration Scams:

While there are good professional immigration consultants who offer sound advice to their clients. Sadly, there are some who are not so straight forward and it is up to people seeking immigration advice to avoid immigration consultant scams. I found a website listing some  immigration scams and realized how important it is to check out the consultant one hires before putting your money on the line.

When dealing with agents to help you get a immigrant or student visa caution is advised. Select courses that will actually benefit you and check the schools thoroughly before selecting one. Just because a school has a fancy name or a foreign address does not mean its great. Be an informed consumer, time spent investigating before laying down your money will help you not only save money but will help your career by steering you to the school and course that is right for you.

Don't be talked into applying for courses that are not of interest to you and will do nothing for your career. Some agents may guarantee admission in schools of their choice and a visa within a matter of days if you go by their selection. Their main purpose may be just to persuade you to accept their service so they can collect their fees.

Don't try for a student visa just for the sake of travelling to a foreign country. There are quite a few people who are adamant on going abroad and when all other avenues of getting a visa fail, they turn to a student visa as a ticket out of India. What lies ahead may be problems that will cost them dearly in money and perhaps problems with the law.
